This week the class is looking at the early to mid 19th century, especially they will be focusing on those people settling Michigan after it became a state. The students were posed the following discussion topic. “One could say that Michigan has a strong reform tradition including abolition.  Why do you think that early settlers were advocates of abolition?  How do we reconcile our abolitionist past with our segregationist past, e.g. not wanting African Americans to vote, keeping African Americans segregated from whites?  Tease out the difference between ending a slave labor system and accepting another racial group as equal.”
