Although from the outset of statehood we stressed the importance of education, it took our state a long time to take steps toward making a structured education system with trained teachers.  Once we did create an educational structure, we were considered by many states to be forward-thinking leaders in education.  Using the text and the primary sources in Michigan Voices on pages 70-72, share with each other what surprised you about Michigan’s early educational structure.  Why did our forefathers feel that education was so necessary that they wrote it into our 1835 Constitution?
