According to Vision of America, the Progressive era lasted what many people think to be a long time, 30 years. From 1890 to 1920. For those of you who aren’t familiar with the Progressive era and what it actually was and stood for. It was a strong social movement by activist that wanted political restore. Progressivism is the political term to change economic and social problems when big business’s first introduced the industrialization of workforce to America.
What Progressives were trying to accomplish during regulations were to speak loudly about their concerns about the power of distribution and wealth in America. With the industrial growth occurring rapidly. The reason being why so many people wanted reform were because of the cruel and dangerous working conditions these big business’s were making people work in. Children were even forced to work. Yes, children. Progressives believed that the government should set hours laws, prohibit child labor, regulate safety at work, and enforce other work related regulations. After many years of blood, sweat and tears the Progressives got what they wanted, but it wasn’t easy. When unions were first created to support workers there were many strikes happening all over America to try and boycott big business’s. Many people were violently beaten. With the help of muckrakers, who were writers that wrote about the horrible circumstances. Muckrakers brought these issues to the community to open the light to others.
After learning and reading as much as I have about the Progressive era, I am a firm believer that what Progressives were attempting was the correct moral and ethical thing. If I was living in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s I would have been fighting for set hours laws, regulate safety, prohibit child labor, set a minimum wage, and institute other work laws as those people were. What these people were trying to do was create what we now consider “the American dream”. I applaud those people for standing up to the rich businesses for what they wanted and for what was correct.
