During this time the progressives are making progress on who they are along with women. Women are starting to become humans and develop who they are today. They are starting to make their mark in the world. World War I begins in 1917 against Germany. People’s civil rights are being taken away during this time. They don’t have a choice of how or when they will enter this war. President Wilson creates the Espionage Act of 1917. This will create a big disagreement among Americans.
The Espionage Act of 1917 made it a crime if you shared information intended to interfere with U.S. armed forces. If you were found guilty of sharing information you could be fined up to $10,000 and sentenced to 20 years in prison. Although this law may seem harsh, you can’t have people releasing information to your enemy’s. They were fighting to protect America and what we have establish here so far.
In 1918 the Sedition Act punished anyone for making false statements that interfered with war, the government, the flag, or the military. Both of these laws where aimed at the socialist and anit -war activist during World War I. They were trying to set boundaries and laws. Without these laws we would not have made it through any war.
