Indigenous People’s Day “Teach-In”


Join the Humanities Learning Center, Delta College’s BEDI Office, and the Castle Museum of Saginaw County History to mark Indigenous People’s Day.

A panel of experts from Michigan and beyond will discuss some major contemporary issues facing Native American communities, including:

The Land: Land rights, land acknowledgments, treaties, and the struggle for unpolluted land and water

Mascots: The (ab)use of Native American names and images by school and professional sports teams

Native American graves: The history of desecration of Indigenous people’s cemeteries, and efforts to protect and reclaim Native American remains

Panelists include:

Heather Bruegl, independent consultant, public history and curator at the Henry Ford museum (Oneida/Stockbridge-Munsee)

Colleen Green, Ferris State University (Little River Band of Ottawa Indians)

Joshua Hudson, Native Organizers Alliance (Ojibwe, Bay Mills Indian Community)

Lisa King, University of Tennessee-Knoxville

Cindy Tekobbe, University of Illinois-Chicago (Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma)

Luhui Whitebear, Oregon State University (Coastal Band of the Chumash Nation)

Representative from the Ziibiwing Center of Anishinabe Culture and Lifeways (Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe) (TBC)
